The North Carolina Child Support Guidelines generally guide support calculations. Relevant information can include both parents’ incomes, the custody arrangement, work-related child care, and health insurance costs. Some cases require a different analysis or a request to deviate from the guidelines.
01
Review income, parenting arrangements, and child-related expenses to understand a proposed obligation.
02
Discuss job changes, income shifts, or changes in care and whether there are grounds to request a modification.
03
Bring the existing order and payment records to discuss enforcement concerns and the available process.
A child support estimate can help you begin a conversation, but it is not a court order. Income sources, self-employment, insurance, and the actual parenting arrangement may need closer review.
We help you identify useful records and discuss support in the context of the applicable guidelines, any existing agreement or order, and your child’s needs. If circumstances have changed, obtain advice before assuming the current obligation has changed too.
Ask the office how to share records securely. Please do not email sensitive case details.

The court and filing location depend on your claim and circumstances. We can discuss those questions at your consultation.
Yes. Sharing custody does not automatically eliminate child support. The calculation depends on the applicable worksheet, income, expenses, and parenting arrangement.
No. An existing court order remains in effect unless it is changed through the appropriate process. Ask about a modification promptly if your circumstances change.
Custody and support are separate legal issues. A visitation dispute does not cancel a support obligation. Discuss enforcement or modification of the relevant order with an attorney.
Not necessarily. A person caring for a child who lives with them may be able to request support without first obtaining a custody order. Eligibility and procedure depend on the circumstances.
A paid initial consultation gives you time with an attorney to discuss the questions affecting your family, finances, and next steps. You do not need to arrive with every answer.
Share your questions about children, support, property, or separation and the decisions you are facing.
Discuss your circumstances, relevant documents, and the options that may apply to your situation.
Ask how the firm may be able to help and what further representation would involve.
Before your appointment: Write down your main questions, gather relevant agreements or court papers, and follow the instructions in your confirmation.
